Khans Grave

A stone tomb rests on a steppe horizon, small against the sweep of land and sky. Khans grave is Nicholas Roerich at his most austere, a monument reduced to silhouette and distance. Ochre earth rolls in long dry bands toward burial mounds at the edge of the plain. Above, heavy clouds in slate and pale violet press down, their edges dragged wet across the sky. The palette is muted umber, dusty rose, cold grey, painted in broad tempera planes with thin, dark contouring around the tomb itself. No figures disturb the site. Only grasses, shadows, and the weight of silence Roerich knew how to build from three or four tones. It suits a study or library wall, somewhere quiet enough to read the emptiness properly.
