Kelmė. Gates of Estate

Tall wooden gates mark the entrance to a Lithuanian country estate in this Kelmė scene by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. The avenue beyond recedes beneath old trees, drawn with a draftsman patience that turns quiet trees into architecture. Crosshatching builds the depth of the tree line while pale washes settle over the grass verge. The gateposts lean slightly, their carved caps softened by weather, and the fence rails run in broken rhythm toward the drive. Everything is ink and restraint, grey breathing into sepia. Suited to a study or hallway, where the hush of a provincial afternoon belongs.
