Rooftops of Kedainiai pile toward the horizon, broken only by church spires and thin chimneys. Mstislav Dobuzhinsky records the Lithuanian town from an elevated vantage, letting the eye wander street by narrow street. Tiled roofs slope at uneven angles, rendered in warm ochres and burnt sienna against a pale sky. The draw of the work is in the linework: each gable, dormer and distant tower articulated with the delicate pen-and-watercolor touch associated with the Mir Iskusstva circle. Shadows fall soft and blue-grey across the facades, and the whole townscape seems to breathe. A quiet study, hallway, or reading room suits this view of provincial Lithuania, where it rewards long, close looking.
