Snow buries the sloping quarter of Zhalyakalnis, and Dobuzhinsky draws Kaunas under that white hush. Kaunas. Zhalyakalnis in winter shows rooftops and gables softened into pale planes, a city holding its breath in January cold. Look closely and the tonal work does everything: grey wash and fine pen lines trace chimney stacks, ice-glazed cobbles, leafless trees thin as wire against the sky. Muted whites and cool blue-greys dominate, punctured by one small dark window or doorway that anchors the whole slope. The perspective tilts gently downhill, the way Kaunas actually feels underfoot.
