Kaunas. Saric Church

A church tower rises above the low roofs of Kaunas, its spire cutting a slim vertical into a soft, overcast sky. Dobuzhinsky sets the Saric Church against the town like a landmark remembered rather than measured. Slender belfry windows and a pointed spire stand rendered in fine linework, the surrounding houses sketched in quick, confident strokes of graphite grey and muted sepia. Streets fall away in receding perspective, their paving suggested by the lightest hatching, while the church silhouette darkens to near black at its base. Blank sky occupies half the composition, giving the masonry room to breathe. Suited to a hallway or study, where a quiet architectural view rewards a slow look.
