Tiled rooftops cascade down toward the Nemunas in this view of Kaunas by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky. Church spires and the ruined castle hill punctuate the skyline, drawn with the precision of an architect and the tenderness of a native son. Crosshatched lines build the gabled facades stone by stone, while soft washes of sepia and smoke grey settle into the streets below. Windows read as small dark commas against pale plaster. In the distance the river curves wide and flat, its far bank dissolving into pencil haze.
