Kaunas. Houses at Daukanto Street

Narrow townhouses climb the slope of Daukanto street in Kaunas, their steep gables and tiled roofs caught by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky in fine ink line and diluted watercolor. Ochre and umber plaster, shuttered windows, a steep run of cobbled pavement dropping between the facades. Thin crosshatching builds shadow under the eaves, while washes of violet grey settle over the rooftops. Chimneys tilt at small angles, giving the whole street the tension of a stage set. It belongs in a study or reading room, propped beside shelves of old maps and travel books, where its quiet street scene rewards long looking.
