Kashmir

Kashmir spreads below in terraced greens, the valley drawn by Nicholas Roerich as a bowl of cultivated land ringed by hard blue ridgelines. Field patterns break the slopes into patchwork squares, each one set down in a slightly different tone of green and gold. Groves of dark trees cluster along the valley floor while water catches light in thin silver threads. The mountains behind hold their snow in thick, creamy impasto, and the sky above cools from pale yellow at the horizon into deep heraldic blue. Every plane is flattened and monumental, the symbolist method applied to real topography. A quiet study, a hallway lined with travel books, or a reading nook with north light suits this view of the vale.
