Karga

A hillside village of stacked stone houses climbs toward snowbound peaks in Karga, one of Nicholas Roerich Himalayan scenes. Flat rooftops catch pale light while smoke threads upward from a single hearth. Roerich builds the slope from blocks of slate blue and raw umber, each dwelling drawn with firm, unadorned outlines. Cold light washes the ridgeline, and the valley below dissolves into thin violet haze. Every plane feels chiseled, carved as much as painted.
