Karelian Landscape. Hyumpola Lake

A low shoreline runs along the edge of Hyumpola lake, water flat as poured pewter under a Karelian sky. Nicholas Roerich sets the whole scene in cool northern greens. Bands of forest in dark spruce tones press down to the waterline, their reflections breaking into long horizontal strokes. The sky takes most of the picture, pale grey-blue over drifts of cloud, and a thin strip of pale shore holds the composition steady at its base. A quiet study or north-facing reading room suits it well, where the cool palette settles into a calm, contemplative corner.
