Karelia

Pine-covered ridges and open water define Karelia, a landscape subject Nicholas Roerich returned to across his northern years. Here the terrain reads in broad, unhurried planes, the kind of country where forest meets lake without ceremony. Slate blues and deep greens build the shoreline, brushed in tempera-like layers that leave the surface matte and mineral. Bands of water sit flat beneath a sky washed thin, and the tree line breaks into small rhythmic strokes along the horizon. The light is northern: cold, even, held low over the water. A study or reading room with linen and dark wood suits it well, somewhere quiet enough to match the stillness.
