Kardang

A whitewashed gompa sits high on a bare Himalayan shoulder, prayer flags strung taut against cobalt air. Kardang comes from Nicholas Roerich, painted during his Central Asian years in the mountains he never stopped returning to. Roerich builds the scene in tempera-like layers: the monastery walls rendered chalk white, roofs pressed flat in slate, the slope below worked in broad strokes of violet and dun. Above everything, peaks stack in cold ultramarine, their snowfields left almost raw. Thin dark strokes mark the mani walls and chortens along the path. A study or reading room with strong natural light suits it best, where the high-altitude blues can carry across the wall.
