Karakoram. Way to Turkestan

A caravan trail threads through the Karakoram, carrying the eye toward Turkestan across Nicholas Roerich mountainscape. Roerich sets the road low in the frame and lets the peaks dominate everything above it. Ochre scree slopes give way to bands of cold cobalt and glacial white where the highest ridges catch sun. Tiny figures on the path read as dark dashes against pale rock, giving scale to the immensity. Thin washes of tempera-like color leave the paper tooth visible in the foreground, a texture that keeps the whole scene tactile and dry. Made for a study, a hallway, or a travelers reading nook.
