Kangchenjunga

Kangchenjunga fills the far edge of the canvas, its five summits rendered in sweeps of pale rose and cold cobalt by Nicholas Roerich. The mountain seems lit from within, the way high snow holds the last of the day. Roerich built his Himalayan scenes in thin, layered washes of tempera, and the effect here is of color stained directly into the sky. Sharp white ridgelines cut across deep blue, and a small dark foreground Anchors the enormous mass above. Suited to a study or reading room where quiet, cold-toned mountain imagery sets the register.
