Kalki Avatar

A white horse and its rider emerge at the crest of the picture in Kalki Avatar, one of Nicholas Roerich meditations on prophecy and high places. The figure rides toward the viewer across snowfields. Roerich paints the horse in pure lead white, unbroken by shadow. Behind it, peak after peak recedes in bands of cobalt, violet and ice blue, each summit colder than the last. A radiance gathers at the horizon line where rider and mountain meet, suggesting the avatar of Hindu tradition arriving at the end of a dark age. Suited to a study, library wall, or quiet reading room.
