Jug and Yellow Fruit

A glazed jug leans against a scatter of yellow fruit, both set down without ceremony on a bare tabletop. Samuel Peploe paints the still life as an arrangement of planes, every object treated as color before it is treated as form. The fruit reads almost solid, lemons or oranges pressed into thick ochre and chrome yellow, each surface catching light along one hard edge. The jug stands behind in cooler blues and greys, its glaze built from flat, deliberate strokes, the shadow beneath it a single decisive violet slab. Nothing is blended away; the brushwork stays visible and assertive across the whole canvas. Suited to a kitchen wall, a breakfast nook, or the shelf above a sideboard where something with appetite belongs.
