Joyous Garden

Roses crowd the foreground, painted in thick petals of vermilion and blush that still seem to catch afternoon light. Joyous Garden belongs to Benjamin Brown, the California painter who made plein air color the whole argument of a picture. Beyond the flowerbeds, sun-washed foliage breaks into dabs of sap green and lemon yellow, laid down wet against wet so hedges shimmer where shade thins. A pale path pulls the eye back toward a garden gate, its posts warmed with quick strokes of peach. Luminous and unhurried, it suits a sunroom, breakfast nook, or any corner that wants a dose of growing things.
