Jezioro Jesienia

The lake at autumn takes over the whole surface: Jezioro Jesienia by Józef Mehoffer shows still water under a sky already thinning toward winter. Oil paint laid in broad, wet strokes carries the scene. Reflections split the surface into bands of ochre, burnt sienna and cold slate blue, each tree at the shoreline doubled in the water with a smear rather than a mirror. Far banks dissolve into pale mist, the brushwork loosening until land and sky nearly merge. Reddish leaves cling along one reed bed, a single warm note against the cooling palette. A quiet study or a lakeside reading nook suits this autumnal view well.
