Jelep La, Tibetan Frontier

A mule track zigzags up bare slopes toward the wind-cut saddle of Jelep La, Tibetan Frontier, painted by Nicholas Roerich as a thin dark seam against walls of rock and ice. Roerich builds the scene in matte tempera, layering cobalt shadow over ultramarine until the ravines read almost black. Snowfields burn white on the upper ridges. Small loaded animals and their drivers press along the trail, dwarfed by cairns and prayer-flag masts at the crest. In a study or entryway it reads as a window onto thin air, a view of long distances for anyone seated at a desk or pausing by the door.
