Izborsk. Towers.

Stone towers crown a rugged hill above Izborsk in this Nicholas Roerich view. The fortress ruins rise against a pale sky, their ancient masonry softened by distance. Roerich paints the stronghold in cool blues and earthen greys, the ramparts drawn with firm, simplified contours. Wisps of cloud drift across the horizon while the grassy slope below carries muted greens and umbers, his tempera-like layering giving the stone a quiet, weathered depth. A fitting presence in a study or hallway, where the old Russian fortress can hold its own against plain walls and low light.
