Italy

Hilltowns rise in tempera planes of olive and rose, the subject of Nicholas Roerich painting titled Italy. Roofs cluster along a ridge while the valley below cools toward violet haze. Cypress spires break the skyline at intervals, their dark verticals answered by pale roads winding uphill. The pigment sits matte and chalky, brushed in broad, confident strokes that flatten distance into layered bands of ochre, sage, and dusty blue. Light gathers along the rooftops rather than the sky. Suited to a study or hallway where a southern landscape can anchor the room.
