Italian Landscape, Cypresses

Dark cypresses rise against a sunlit Italian hillside, their flame-like silhouettes the whole point of the picture. Louis Valtat built the scene around them. Olive ground and pale sky hold the composition in cool greens and chalk whites, while the trees burn in near-black strokes loaded with paint. Rooftops and terraced slopes sit small at the base, their ochre and rust tones catching the light. The brushwork is quick, thick, and confident, Fauve energy applied to a quiet provincial road. Suited to a study or a hallway where something rooted and southern can anchor a plain wall.
