Island of Rest

A small island rests in the middle of a still mountain lake, its lone refuge lit by the last cold light of evening. Island of Rest is one of the quiet visions Nicholas Roerich painted during his Himalayan years. The water lies flat and pale, a mirror of turquoise fading into deep blue at the shore. The island itself rises dark against the horizon, its white dwelling catching the glow, while layered ridgeline behind it dissolves from violet into slate. Every edge is clean, every plane simplified, the brushwork smooth and deliberate.
