Irises

Violet iris blooms rise on stiff stems, beards touched with gold. A flower study by Stanisław Wyspiański, the Polish painter and designer at the heart of Young Poland. The pastel lies thick and chalky across the sheet. Indigo shades into wine-red at each petal edge, while leaves run from sage to a blue so cold it reads almost slate. Strokes stay hatched and unhurried, form built up in layers rather than smeared flat. Against pale plaster or warm oak, the deep violets hold their own; a stairwell, a study corner, or a bedroom in linen tones suits them well.
