Iridescent Interpenetration No.7

Wedges of lemon yellow and violet cut across the sheet, folding into one another as if light itself were being sliced apart. This is Iridescent Interpenetration No.7, a work by the Italian Futurist Giacomo Balla. Triangular planes of opal pink, cobalt blue and acid green overlap without a single hard edge, their color shifting where two shapes cross, the way oil on a wet street throws back a rainbow sheen. Thin white seams separate each wedge, keeping the geometry legible while the hues bleed optically at their borders. Look long enough and the forms seem to rotate, a spinning diagram of motion painted flat. Hang it where the light moves through the day: a stairwell, a hallway facing a window, a modern dining space.
