Iona Study

Pale sand and a low tide line sweep across the foreground of Iona Study. Samuel Peploe builds the beach from quick, blocky strokes, the kind you can almost feel underfoot. Thin clouds drag across a bruised blue sky. Grasses lean off a machair bank in yellow-green, and distant hills sit in cool mauve against the water. Every plane is flattened, then reasserted with a dark contour, the way the Scottish Colourists liked to hold shape and colour in the same grip. It belongs in a bright reading nook or a hallway where daylight moves across it through the day.
