Iona

Green headland juts into cold Hebridean water. This is Iona, seen by Samuel Peploe at the height of his commitment to bold colour and flattened form. Patches of emerald and viridian sit beside a sea broken into planes of ultramarine and pale turquoise. Rocks along the shore are built up in thick, separate strokes of violet and ochre, and the sky above stays almost white, letting the land carry all the heat. The horizon sits high, pushing the island and its reflection forward toward the viewer. It belongs in a bright sitting room or above a desk where daylight can meet those greens head on.
