Iona

Iona under high sun: white sand, shallow water the colour of unripe grapes, and rocks laid out in blocks of violet and rose. Samuel Peploe painted the island as a set of hard-edged colour planes, sea and shore meeting with almost no gradient between them. Look at the brushwork. The water is built from short, flat strokes of turquoise and cobalt, each one separate and unblended, while the foreground rocks carry weight in slate grey and dusty pink. The sky stays thin, a pale wash that lets the whiteness of the beach do the work. A north-facing room benefits most here, where daylight stays cool and even. Consider a reading nook or a stairwell landing where the eye can rest on the horizon line.
