Interior

A quiet domestic scene, Interior shows a sunlit room reduced to its essentials: a chair, a table, a window letting pale northern light fall across the floor. Samuel Peploe paints it with the calm economy of the Scottish Colourists at their most restrained. The palette stays close to home. Soft greys and greens cover the walls, while a single patch of warm ochre where sunlight strikes the floorboards carries the whole composition. Brushwork is deliberate and blocky, forms built from flat planes of colour rather than detail, the way a room looks when you half close your eyes. Suited to a hallway or reading corner where daylight shifts through the day, echoing the mood of the room depicted.
