Interior of a Mosque

Columns rise from a prayer hall deep in shadow. Sevket Dag paints the interior of a mosque as a forest of shafts, domed light filtering down where the eye least expects it. Slender pillars recede row upon row, their stone turning from cool grey to amber as lamplight catches them. Overhead the dome glows, calligraphy bands circling the drum in muted ochre and deep red. Small figures gather near the floor, their silhouettes dwarfed by the architecture around them. Shadow pools between the arches, and every surface seems to hold a borrowed glow. A quiet presence for a study, library, or reading nook that rewards long looking.
