Indian Church

A white wooden church sits small and stark at the center of the canvas, dwarfed by the black-green firs rising behind it like a wall of wilderness. This is Emily Carr at her most searching: a mission building planted in the shadow of the coastal rainforest, where the village totems lean and the trees refuse to yield ground. Carr builds the scene out of deep viridian and near-black greens, the forest painted in thick, churning strokes that swallow the light. The pale church facade catches a thin brightness against all that darkness, its simple gable and cross held up as a lone human mark. Around it, the undergrowth presses close, roots and trunks rendered with the same muscular brushwork she brought to the Haida and Gitxsan villages of the British Columbia coast. Hangs with weight in a study, a hallway, or a reading room that favors moody northern landscapes over soft decoration.
