In the Saddle

A rider sits deep, hat brim low, horse and man caught mid-stride on a Slovenian country lane. In the Saddle shows Ivan Grohar at his most physical, oil paint dragged on in thick, sure strokes. The horse comes forward in bay and umber impasto, mane and tail whipped in with a few loaded flicks of the bristle. The mounted figure hunches in a dark coat, reins slack, while the meadow behind dissolves into loose greens under a pale sky. A study or reading room suits the scene well, its earth-toned palette and unhurried motion carrying the sound of hooves long after the road runs out.
