Tall poplars rise in vertical ranks through a quiet park, their crowns cropped against a pale sky in this woodcut vision by Anna Ostroumova-Lebedeva, titled In the Park. Poplar trees. Ostroumova-Lebedeva built her reputation on the woodcut, and the medium shows everywhere here: firm black trunks, crosshatched shadow pooling at the roots, foliage broken into rhythmic carved notches rather than soft leaf mass. Slender poplar forms, the signature silhouette of Petersburg garden design, recede in measured stages toward a distant fence line, cool greys and greens pressing against unprinted white paper.
