In Amsterdam

A canal street in Amsterdam opens the picture, gabled brick facades leaning slightly over the water while Robert Henri sets his figures against the cool northern light. Olive and umber brushwork builds the houses storey by storey, windows picked out in quick pale dabs. Below, reflections fracture into short horizontal strokes of grey, ochre and dull green where the water carries the buildings downward. Pedestrians move as loose silhouettes, coats dark against the pavement, their forms suggested by a few loaded strokes of the brush rather than drawn. The sky stays high and milky, pressing the whole street into a hushed, damp atmosphere. A reading nook, hallway or study with soft daylight suits this Dutch city scene well.
