Impressionist Landscape

Sunlight breaks across a hillside in loose, deliberate strokes. Harry Phelan Gibb built this impressionist landscape out of thick paint, letting each dab of colour stand on its own. Grass reads as layered yellow green, sky as scraped blue grey, and shadow pools in violet under every rise. The brushwork stays visible everywhere, short dabs and loaded strokes that give the surface a raised, almost woven texture. Gibb studied with the modernists in Paris, and that training shows in how the forms are simplified into blocks of pure colour while the scene itself remains a plain stretch of countryside. A sunroom or stair landing with plain white walls would let all that broken colour do its work.
