Immortelles

Dried everlastings stand in a small vase, their papery heads still holding a rusty gold. Stefan Luchian painted Immortelles near the end of his career, when flowers replaced the landscapes and portraits of his earlier years. The petals read as thin parchment, ochre and faded copper, each brushstroke following the curve of a single bloom. Behind them, a dark ground swallows detail, so the flowers seem to float forward. Loose, dry handling in the stems contrasts with the careful dots of light along the blossom edges. Made for a quiet corner, this reproduction suits a reading nook, a study shelf, or a bedroom wall that asks for something still and reflective.
