Ices

Glacier walls fill the frame from edge to edge, their surfaces broken into planes of steel blue and bone white. Ices belongs to the Himalayan series Nicholas Roerich painted during his Central Asian journeys, when the high cold became his only subject. The brushwork runs in long, flat sweeps, tempera-thin and matte, so the frozen slopes read as cut stone rather than weather. Pale crevasses score the midground. Above them the sky holds a hard, pale wash, almost the same temperature as the ice below, leaving sky and glacier nearly indistinguishable at the horizon. Hang it in a study or a cool north-lit hallway, anywhere that welcomes silence and winter light.
