Ice on the Oise River

Frozen shallows stretch across the Oise, and Gustave Loiseau records every ridge in the ice with quick, loaded brushwork. Patches of open water hold the grey sky, and the far bank sits low and pale behind bare poplars. Thin whites and cool blues dominate, broken by the muddy ochre of exposed gravel and the dark strokes of winter reeds along the edge. Frost silvers the reed beds in the foreground. A study or reading nook gives this winter river scene the quiet north light it deserves.
