Ice on the Oise River

Thin ice plates the Oise near a frost-bound bank, painted by Gustave Loiseau. Grey water slides beneath the crust while willows and low roofs hold a pale winter hush. Loiseau builds the surface from short, enameled strokes, en plein air in the post impressionist manner. Ashen blues and pewter greys ripple across the river, broken by bone-white drifts where the cold has caught. Bare branches cross the sky in fine dark calligraphy. Made for a reading nook or a quiet study, this winter river scene brings a crisp northern stillness to the room.
