Ice on the Oise River

Sheet ice locks the Oise from bank to bank, a pale grey plain stitched with cracks and shallow melt pools. Gustave Loiseau reads the frozen river patiently, recording every seam in the surface and the hush that settles over the waterway. Brushwork stays tight and deliberate across the ice, short strokes of zinc white, glaucous green and cold slate blue laid side by side. Dark hulls of moored boats sit trapped in the freeze, their hulls doubled in the sheen, while bare poplars and low towing houses hold the far shore in thin silhouette. A quiet study, a hallway in a northern flat, or a reading nook that faces north light would carry this winter scene well.
