Gas lamps flicker along the Thames embankment as the Houses of Parliament rise through evening haze, Victoria Tower brooding in shadow while Big Ben burns amber against a deepening violet sky. George Hyde Pownall built his reputation on London at dusk, and here Westminster Bridge glows wet with reflected lamplight, small carriages and hatted figures crossing in silhouette below the gothic pinnacles.
