About this work

Houses in Normandy

Rooftops of blue slate and warm red tile climb a hillside, half-timbered facades catching thin light between brick chimneys. Gustave Loiseau built Houses in Normandy from thousands of small strokes. His brushwork crosses into a fine lattice, grey woven over green, so the plastered walls seem to shiver in damp Channel air. Ochre render, moss-dark shutters, a packed-earth lane dropping toward orchard rows. Each roof reads as its own ledger of hatched color. Set it along a stairway, in a study with worn shelves, or in the hallway where the day begins. Its hushed, weathered palette suits rooms that wake slowly.
