Houses at Pontoise

Houses at Pontoise stacks its rooftops up a steep hillside, red tiles and pale plaster facades terracing toward the river below. Gustave Loiseau builds the town out of small, patient strokes. Look at the surface: oil color laid in fine crosshatch, a lattice of orange, madder and grey over each roof plane. Walls glow cream and ochre where the light strikes, green gardens fill the gaps between doorways, and chimney stacks break the roofline against a milky sky. A stairwell or study suits it, the uphill climb of roofs and gardens pulling the eye upward with the steps.
