House on the Left

A house presses against the left edge of the picture, its pale facade broken by small dark windows and a steep roof line. Vuillard lets the building dominate, leaving the rest of the composition to open ground and shifting weather. Brushwork stays dense and broken throughout, the Nabi habit of treating a wall of plaster like a tapestry surface. Muted rose, grey green, and deep violet move across the masonry, while the foreground dissolves into short, textured strokes of earth color. Nothing is outlined; form emerges from pigment alone. Suited to a hallway or stair landing, where the tilted, intimate geometry rewards a glance passed on the way through.
