House of Monsieur de Irvy near Vaudreuil

A gabled Norman farmhouse anchors the middle distance, its rendered walls catching pale light off the Seine flats near Vaudreuil. Gustave Loiseau built the scene in short, layered strokes of oil, the kind of crosshatched touch he carried through the French countryside. Trees crowd the left edge, trunks scrubbed in grey violet, while the roofline breaks into planes of rust and muted orange. Loosened brushwork in the foreground grass keeps everything moving, restless even in stillness. It settles naturally into a study or reading room, anywhere that rewards a long, quiet look.
