Hommage to Saint John the Baptist

Saint John the Baptist fills the frame alone, a lean ascetic figure against open sky, in Hommage to Saint John the Baptist by Nicholas Roerich. Tempera gives the scene a matte, chalky surface. The prophet raises a slim reed cross, his robe falling in a deep column of madder red beside slopes of raw ochre rock, the sky laid in one unbroken band of ultramarine. Broad, flat strokes keep the brushwork visible, closer to fresco than to gloss. It belongs in a quiet study or a lamplit reading nook, one strong presence giving the room a fixed point of stillness.
