Hoarfrost at Huelgoat, Finistere

Hoarfrost whitens a Breton field at Huelgoat in Finistere, and Gustave Loiseau sets the whole morning down in pale blues, greys, and that milky violet frost leaves on stubble and stone. Loiseau built his surfaces out of small, rhythmic dabs, and here they read as frost itself: short strokes of white and ice blue laid over the brown of frozen earth, hedges dark along the field edges, bare trees picking out a cold sky. The villages of Brittany, with their granite and their low slates, sit quietly beneath it all. Made for a hallway or a kitchen nook where the light shifts through the day, this is winter countryside as Breton farmers know it.
