Himalayas. Turquoise Lake

A still sheet of turquoise water fills the foreground of Himalayas. Turquoise Lake, held in the basin of high peaks rendered by Nicholas Roerich. The color does the talking here, that unmistakable blue-green he returned to across his Himalayan series. Look closer and the mountains rise in layered planes of cobalt and violet, their snowfields picked out pale against the deep sky. The lake surface sits flat and unbroken, a band of mineral color wedged between dark foreground ridges and cold summits. Everything reads in broad, tempera-like masses, edges firm, no softness anywhere. A study or reading room with pale walls gives this blue the quiet it asks for.
