Himalayas. Tops of Mountains with the Turquoise Sky

Jagged white summits rise against a field of unbroken turquoise in this Himalayas composition by Nicholas Roerich. The peaks hold their snow in flat, luminous planes while the sky presses close behind them. Color carries everything here. The turquoise is laid deep and even, almost glazed, so the ridgelines cut like pale enamel against it. Shadows on the slopes lean toward violet and cold blue, and the lower crags darken into slate, giving the range its weight without a single soft gradient. Roerich painted these mountains as places of stillness, and the mood holds. Hang it where the light is low and steady: a study, a hallway, or a reading corner that needs a horizon.
