Himalayas (study)

Snow summits press against a deep blue sky, the ridgeline pared down to its essentials. This Himalayas study by Nicholas Roerich shows a painter thinking in masses of color rather than detail, catching the range in a few decisive passes. Tempera-thin color sits in flat, luminous planes: cobalt sky over paler blue washes, snowfields left almost white, shadows settling into violet in the hollows. The brushwork stays visible, quick and broad, the kind of shorthand a painter earns after years among the passes. Nothing is fussed over; the mountains do the work. A quiet, high-altitude presence for a study, reading nook, or hallway where cool color and open space set the tone.
